Hello,

I have an interesting issue.. I am on the latest version
of PH with the I2CS update. I am running PH on win 2003
VM in vmware connected to a 2412S. Everything works just
great and it is so reliable I never really think about
 it.

Well, I really like the 2242 hub for its ability to use
the network to communicate with PH, so I purchased one
and set everything up like Dave instructed in this post.

 http://www.power-home.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?
 TID=3328&KW=2242

Everything seems to run fine for a while, but out of the
blue PH starts telling me it cannot communicate with the
PLM (2242) and tries to restart it like 5 times before it
stops. All it takes to get things communicating again is
to restart PH and we are good for a while. I don't do
anything to the HUB, just restart PH. From what I recall
 PH is not locked up.

I have posted the Raw log to show what is going on below.
I don't have anything else connecting to the hubs ports
so I am stumped as to why it just stops. Is anyone else
having this issue? BeachBum kind of mentions some type of
issue like this with the smartlinc in this post.

Anyone have any suggestion or can tell me what is really
going on from the log? If I can get this to be as rock
solid setup as I have with the 2412s, I can put the hub
into my central wiring box and plug it into my switch and
 control it from my VM.

I currently have the HUB setup as a PLM Controller in
controller settings and the device type setup as a 2414S,
is that correct? Any other settings I might have missed
 or need to change?

Let me know if anyone has any question or needs more
 info.

I think I am going to look into some of the items in this
 older post..

Hmmmm, I wonder if this is what Dave refers to as WONKY!!

"The only problem is that sometimes the virtual serial
 port plugin can be wonky"

 http://www.power-home.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?
 TID=3306&KW=2334

OK so I am going down the path that the VSP plugin is
WONKY.. I just like that word Dave!!!

I found this software a while back when I first
vitualized my PH system an had no serial port. The
software is called VSPE and it can be found here.

 http://www.eterlogic.com/Products.VSPE.html

I have it installed and hooked up using com 7 and 9761
port for the hub. I disabled the VSP in PH.

To configure it, you need to add a Connector Device first
at Com 7, then add another device TcpClient Com7 IP
address of the hub and port 9761. Once those devices are
added make sure the PH plugin is disabled and then hit
 the play button.

It works so far!!! So now I just need to see if it will
work any better than the VSP plugin.

I know others are having issues getting the VSP plugin to
work in windows 8. This software is 32 bit freeware so
you may want to give it a try until the next version of
 PH is out.

I will keep you posted on if it crashes. :)

Jaaay,

 Definitely wonky .

I would certainly let the new VSP software play out to see if its more reliable than the PH VSP plugin. Ive got a rework for the plugin on the todo list but it there is a third party that is more reliable (and free to boot) then there is no compelling reason to use the PH VSP plugin.

If it turns out that the new VSP has problems as well, another option (for the PH VSP plugin) would be to create a trigger of type Controller for your Insteon controller ID with a type number of Restart. This trigger will fire on every restart attempt that PowerHome does when COMMs is lost. Make the action a Raw Formula and use this formula:

 ph_pictrl("YOUR_VSP_PLUGIN_ID","reinit",0)

Obviously, substitute the correct ID for your VSP plugin.

What this will do is when PH restarts the controller, it will also reinitialize the PH VSP plugin which should restore the connection. What you will usually see happen is a restart (which will fail but reinit the plugin) followed by another restart which should then work properly.

In any event, keep us posted on how the new VSP software works out.

 Dave.

Well so far so good (24hrs). This is the longest I have
ever been connected to the HUB without comm's being lost.

Its a great start, but I will let it go the week and see.

Thanks Dave for the reinitialize PH VSP Plugin info.

Well Dave, No more Wonky!!!

It has been on solid for the week.. Not one drop.

I have about 20 devices with the Status Scan on.. Its
running like a train down the tracks.

I don't expect any issues moving forward.

Post if anyone needs any more info.

I will update this post if it ever drops over the next 3
 months.

It seems to work good for my setup. At some point here in
the next month or so I will need to upgrade everything to
windows 2008 R2 or 2012. I will update the post if this
software works with those OS's, unless someone gets there
 before I do.

Just a small update.

I have had to move on to Windows 2008 R2..

The move was simple enough. I wanted let everyone know
that I still have not had any issues with the New VSPE
 software.

 BUT,

It looks like the 64bit version is not free..
looks like you need to register it for $24.95.
Sorry I missed that originally guys..

It looks like it lets you install it free to try it with
messages prompting you to register it.

Its working on win 2008 R2 just as well as the 32bit
 version on win 2003.

I will keep you posted if anything changes.
